If the injury requires first aid only:

  1. Instruct a qualified person to administer appropriate first aid immediately.
  2. Complete and submit the Report of Injury.
  3. Determine the cause of the accident and obtain names of all witnesses.
  4. Think about and apply corrective measures to prevent future recurrences of the accident.

Note: If you have any questions or doubts about the seriousness of the injury, always treat it as one requiring a physician's treatment.

If the injury requires physician treatment:

  1. Seek prompt medical attention by taking the injured employee to a physician or to the nearest emergency facility (if warranted).
  2. Complete and submit the Report of Injury. 
  3. Determine the cause of the accident and obtain names of all witnesses.
  4. Think about and apply corrective measures to prevent future recurrences of the accident.
  5. If a serious injury occurs and equipment is involved, do not move the equipment if it can be left at the scene of the accident. In all cases, be sure the equipment is secured in a safe place and cannot be tampered with. Regardless of the type of injury, the most important step an employer can take in returning the employee to work is to stay in contact with the employee.  Checking on the employee's medical condition and following his/her continued progress will demonstrate your concern and encourage a quick return to work.
